JuCo baseball: Meridian CC earns sweep of Coahoma

The Meridian Community College baseball returned to the field Wednesday afternoon by taking a long road trip to north Mississippi to battle Coahoma Community College in a crucial conference doubleheader.

The Eagles brought plenty of offense with them on the road by sweeping past Coahoma by final scores of 20-7 and 5-2. 

MCC improved to 13-7 overall for the season and 2-2 in MACJC play. The Eagles will return to the diamond Saturday with a conference doubleheader at Scaggs Field against 10th-ranked Itawamba Community College. The first pitch of the twin bill is slated to begin at 2 p.m. 

MCC used several big innings at the plate in Game 1 to defeat the Tigers. MCC took a 6-1 lead in the second inning and never looked back. Chase Coker finished the game with a grand slam, while Blake Fields knocked in a pair of runs on a single and double. Milton Smith and CJ Hughes each had an RBI double, while Garrett Busby had a pair of doubles and one RBI. JD Gann picked up an RBI on a single, and Zack Carter also added a pair of RBIs in the Game 1 victory. 

Caleb Yarbrough picked up the pitching victory in Game 1 by working 7 2/3 innings and collecting six strikeouts. 

MCC finished off the sweep of Coahoma in Game 2. JD Gann led the way at the plate in the second game with an RBI double, while Cade Ewing added and RBI double in the three-run victory over the Tigers.
