Meridian area residents reap academic honors

• Barbara Alston, K’Tara Harris and Randy Creighton have been selected to receive the Charles and Doretha Young, (MLK) Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $750 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from the Charles L. Young, Sr. Foundation directed by Charles L. Young Jr. Young Sr. was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives and served District 82 for 29 years. He was a strong advocate for education and a loyal friend to Meridian Community College.

Alston is a 1987 graduate of Heidelberg High School. She is in the ADN Accelerated Program at MCC and works full-time at Rush Specialty Hospital of Meridian. Alston plans to become a nurse midwife.
Harris, a 2006 graduate of Hazlehurst High School, is in the third semester of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at MCC. She is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses and the Mississippi Organization of Associate Degree Nursing. Harris works part-time at Grace and Mercy Personal Care in Hazlehurst. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Alcorn State University and work as a Med-Surg Floor Nurse at the V. A. Hospital in Jackson.
Creighton, a 2014 honors graduate of Quitman High School, is a freshman in the Industrial Maintenance Program at MCC. He wants to pursue a career with Rowan Companies Inc.
• Courtashia Luckett has been selected to receive the Karen Bounds Hamilton Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College.
This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by Mr. Fred Hamilton of Newton.
Luckett, a 2004 graduate of Philadelphia High School, is in the third semester of the MCC Associate Degree Nursing Program. She is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses and the Mississippi Organization of Associate Degree Nursing. Puckett plans to continue her education to become a nurse practitioner.

• DECATUR – Savannah Hillhouse of Decatur was selected Surgical Technology Student of the Year at East Central Community College. Hillhouse was presented the award in recognition of her academic excellence in the classroom and performance in clinical settings.
• JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Earnest Hunter of Macon, Miss., was awarded a bachelor of science degree in Exercise Science/Wellness from Jacksonville State University on Dec. 16, 2016.
• BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jerraldene Mixon of Collinsville, Miss., has been named to the Champlain College Dean’s List for the Fall 2016 semester. Mixon is majoring in Computer Forensics & Digital Investigations.
Students on the Dean’s List have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher during the semester.
• TROY, Ala. – Madison Williams of Meridian, Miss., has been named to the Provost’s List at Troy University for the Fall Semester/Term 2 of the 2016/2017 academic year.
The Provost’s List honors full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who have a grade point average of at least 3.65.
• TROY, Ala. – Loreal Reed of Toomsuba, Miss., has been named to the Chancellor’s List at Troy University for the Fall Semester/Term 2 of the 2016/2017 academic year.
The Chancellor’s List honors full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who earn a grade point average of 4.0.
