HATTIESBURG — William Carey University students Mikayla Giles of Meridian and John Mark Vincent of Decatur were presented scholarships from the Mississippi Baptist Foundation through the Board of Ministerial Education.
Giles, senior intercultural studies major serving at LoveNow Community Church as Children’s Ministry Director, recipient of the Carpenter-Gandy Ministerial Scholarship. This award was established in 2000 by Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Gandy to provide financial assistance to ministerial students at Mississippi Baptist colleges. It was founded in memory of their mothers, Mrs. Nora Gandy, who attended Blue Mountain College, and Mrs. Ruth Carpenter, who attended William Carey College, and in recognition of the role Mississippi College has played in educating many family members. It also reflects their commitment to the education of Southern Baptist Convention ministers.
Vincent, a junior religion major, received the William Clawson Scholarship. The Board of Ministerial Education established the Clawson Scholarship in 1987 to honor Dr. William Clawson upon his retirement. He served for many years as chairman of the Religion Department at William Carey College and as Campus Representative to the board. Before coming to William Carey, Dr. Clawson served as a Southern Baptist missionary in Mexico. After many years of faithful service, he passed away in 2013.
• BATON ROUGE, La. — Madeline Griffin, Layne Burns and Kristyn Gore, all of Meridian, Mississippi, were recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Mississippi/
Phi Kappa Phi is recognized as the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. These residents are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into the honor society each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the Top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
• SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Joshua Myers of Meridian, Mississippi, was one of 56 students from around the world who enrolled in the Doctor of Chiropractic degree program at Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg in October.
• CLINTON — Jordan Seale of Decatur is a member archery team at of the Mississippi College. The team competed at the 3D National Collegiate Tournament in Foley, Alabama, Oct. 25-28.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Caroline Wigley of Gilbertown is among students involved in the University of Alabama’s Capstone Agency, which has been awarded Best Campaign, Best Tactic and Best Student-Run Firm in the 2018 Public Relations Student Society of America Student-Run Firm Awards.
Given annually at the PRSSA National Conference, these awards celebrate outstanding campaigns and tactics used by PRSSA’s nationally affiliated, student-run firms across the country. Capstone Agency won Best Tactic and Best Campaign in 2017 and was named Best Student-Run Firm in 2016. The Best Student-Run Firm award cannot be won by the same agency two years in a row.
The Capstone Agency is among opportunities the University of Alabama provides for students to gain hands-on professional experience before graduation. According to Maret Montanari, the program’s firm director, the awards Capstone Agency received speak not only to the members’ dedication, hard work ethic and talent, but also to the quality of the C&IS student experience.
Capstone Agency’s submission for Best Campaign featured work completed for Alabama Power, titled “What Powers UA.” The winning submission for Best Tactic came from the firm’s Valentine’s Day promotion for UA’s club hockey team.
Also recognized at the PRSSA National Conference, UA’s PRSSA chapter received the Star Chapter award and won the Best PRSA/PRSSA Relationship Award. The Star Chapter Award encourages chapter leadership to provide programming and relationship-building opportunities for students and rewards them for achieving these goals. The PRSSA faculty adviser, Tracy Sims, was also recognized for her commitment and guidance to the chapter.
Capstone Agency is a nationally affiliated, student-run, integrated communications firm comprised of communication students at UA. The agency has been a student organization in the College of Communication and Information Sciences since 2008.
The University of Alabama PRSSA Chapter is a leading pre-professional organization for students interested in public relations, communications and other related fields.
• TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Capstone Horn Quartet, also known as Tater and the Tots, is the first University of Alabama horn quartet to win the International Horn Society Summer Symposium Student Amateur Quartet Competition, which was held at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Among the quartet members is Antonio Padilla of Meridian, Mississippi.
Tater and the Tots competed against some of the best student horn players from throughout the U.S. and the world. In the final competition, they competed against five quartets in a concert for a live audience and a panel of five judges.
Declared the winners, Tater and the Tots were selected to give an additional performance on the final day of the workshop in a concert where all the winners performed.
The quartet has been playing together for about 10 months. They received a certificate for their win.
