Burks

Samantha McIntosh has been selected to receive the Kimberly Renata Govan Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $1,350 award is funded through the MCC Foundation by Angela and T’Keyah Williams, cousins of Kimberly, and her mother, Ardra Govan, who was a long-time MCC employee. This scholarship will be given to a student in the Respiratory Care Practitioner Program.

Macintosh, a 2012 honors graduate of Kemper County High School, is a sophomore in the Respiratory Care Practitioner Program at Meridian Community College. She is a member of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), National Tech Honor Society, Respiratory Care Practitioners and MBSU. 

Macintosh is the mother of a 1-year old and works part-time at New Haven Memorial Funeral Home in DeKalb. She plans to receive her bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Advanced Respiratory Practitioner, then attend med school.

Christina Knox has been selected to receive the A. D. Burdette Scholarship at Meridian Community College.

This $2,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established in 1991 by Mrs. Anna Burdette as a memorial tribute to her husband. “Red” Burdette served on the Meridian Separate School Board during the time MCC was located on the Meridian High School campus. He had a strong commitment to education and to the community. A veteran of World War I, Burdette served as president of the Meridian Kiwanis Club and chairman of what is now the United Way. 

Knox, a 2017 graduate of Northeast High School, is in the University Transfer Program at MCC and a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Knox plans to transfer to a four-year university and pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Madison Boyette has been selected to receive the Alfred Rosenbaum Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $1,600 award is funded through the MCC Foundation in memory of Alfred Rosenbaum. Rosenbaum served in both World War II and Korea as an aviator in the Marines. He was a leader, entrepreneur, mentor, philanthropist and civil servant that played a significant role in making his hometown of Meridian and the state of Mississippi a better place to live.

Boyette, a 2017 graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School, is in the University Transfer Program at MCC. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College, and the Baptist Student Union. She plans to obtain a bachelor’s degree in science, and then apply for dental school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and specialize in oral/maxillofacial surgery.

Tonda Burks has been selected to receive the ADN Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation.

Burks, a 1987 graduate of Meridian High School, is a third-semester nursing student, a member of the Organization of Student Nurses and the Mississippi Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. Burks is the mother of two adult children and works full time at Alliance Health Center. After graduating from MCC, Burks plans to obtain her bachelor’s degree. 

Catherine Dean has been selected to receive the AT&T Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $1,600 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from an endowment established by the telecommunications service provider. According to C. D. Smith, AT&T regional manager, the endowment is designed to strengthen the mission of the State Board of Community and Junior Colleges in Mississippi through scholarships for deserving students.

Dean is a 2018 graduate of Lamar High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Art Honor Society, yearbook staff, mock trial, student council, and Beta Club. She is in the University Transfer Program at MCC and is undecided on her field of study. 

Bailey Wetzstein has been selected to receive the Beverly Barham Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $500 award was initiated by the Dusty Social Service Club in 1990. Mrs. Dwight Barham of Hattiesburg has continued to fund the scholarship each year. Preference in selection is given to a member of the local group. 

Wetzstein is a 2018 high honors graduate of Northeast High School, where she was an officer of the Beta Club, the Student Body President, a member HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and the Dusty Social Service Club. She is taking pre-requisite courses to enter in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at MCC. She works part-time at Southern Accents. 

Claudine Fuller has been selected to receive the Charles L. Young, Sr. Cosmetology Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $1,100 award is funded through the MCC Foundation from the Charles L. Young Sr. Foundation directed by Charles L. Young Jr. Mr. Young senior was a member of the Mississippi House of Representatives and served District 82 for 29 years. He was a strong advocate for education and a loyal friend to the College. 

Fuller, a 1988 graduate of Meridian High School, is in the Cosmetology Program at MCC. She is married with two adult children. After graduation, Fuller plans to join the workforce and further her education in the field of art.

Anna Maria Pierce and Dakota Pace Cason have been selected to receive the Phil Hardin Foundation Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

These $5,000 awards are funded through the MCC Foundation by the Phil Hardin Foundation.  Being convinced that “education was key to Mississippi’s future,” entrepreneur and philanthropist Phil Hardin established a foundation designed to “work for the improvement of the education of Mississippians.” The Phil Hardin Foundation Board takes seriously its responsibility to carry on the legacy of Mr. Hardin by using the resources of the foundation to “benefit succeeding generations of Mississippians and Mississippi communities.”  These awards are a result of that commitment.

Pierce is a member of The Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College and a President’s Scholar. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa where she serves as the vice president of scholarship. Pierce is majoring in kinesiology. She plans to attend Mississippi State University. Her career goal is to become an orthopedic physical therapist. Pierce is a member of the Baptist Student Union Leadership Team and conducts a Bible study group. 

Cason is a member of the Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College and a President’s List Scholar. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and an active member of First Baptist Church in Meridian. Cason is majoring in business administration and plans to attend Mississippi State-Meridian.
