Residents are invited to learn more about their health as the Community Health Improvement Network, the health initiative of The Montgomery Institute, will host a Colon Cancer Awareness Lunch & Learn on Thursday, March 26.
This free event, set for noon at NorthPark Church, 7770 Highway 39 North, is open to the public, but RSVP is required by March 24.
The session will feature Dr.Thomas Barry Calvit, a gastroenterologist who will discuss colon cancer prevention and the importance of early detection. Colon cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States, yet it is one of the most preventable forms of cancer.
“Colon cancer is preventable since it typically develops from polyps that can be detected and removed before they become cancerous. Colon cancer is a growth of cells that begins in a part of the large intestine,” Calvit said.
CHIN President Beverly Knox emphasized the importance of community education and awareness to prevent colon cancer from developing.
“Colon cancer is one of the few cancers that can often be prevented through early screening and awareness,” she said. “By educating our community about prevention and encouraging regular screenings, we can help save lives.”
To reserve a seat, RSVP by March 24 by calling Knox at 601-483-2661.
