MDOT: Roll into Mardi Gras safely

Mardi Gras season is in full swing in Mississippi with parades in the streets, king cakes on tables and purple, green and gold at every turn. To keep the good times rolling, the Mississippi Department of Transportation wants to remind motorists of a few ways to keep their krewe safe this Carnival season.
Most importantly, know that Mardi Gras beads won’t pay DUI fees. Driving impaired could result in legal troubles or even the tragic loss of life. Make sure to have a plan in place for a safe and sober ride home well before the festivities start.
Nothing stifles the fun like being stuck in traffic. Spend more time catching beads with the MDOT Traffic mobile app, which shows real-time traffic conditions like road closures, construction work, traffic accidents and more. Check the app before heading out to navigate like Mardi Gras royalty.
“The strong tradition of Mardi Gras in south Mississippi brings families and communities together in celebration, so please do your part to ensure these good times don’t turn tragic,” said Brad White, MDOT executive director. “A little advance planning and smart choices can ensure everyone stays safe and enjoys the season.”
Here are some tips from MDOT to revel in safety this Mardi Gras season:
— If you drink, do NOT drive. Call a taxi, order a ride or find a sober driver.
— Slow down and watch out for pedestrians, especially before, during and after parades.
— Be mindful of road closures; never attempt to drive around barricades.
— At night parades, wear reflective clothing and/or glowsticks to be more visible to motorists.
— Avoid all distractions and concentrate on the road.
— Use extreme caution in work zones; slow down and watch out for workers.
— Always wear your seatbelt. It is your greatest defense in a wreck.
— Impaired drivers are a danger to themselves and others on the road. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call the police when it is safe to do so.
