Lamar School boys needed a confidence booster.
Well, they got it on Friday night as the Raiders saw three players score in double figures as Lamar raced past Newton County Academy 60-29 in a non-division matchup.
Coming into the game the Raiders (10-10) had lost five out of their last six games.
“Had a quick start tonight and the ball movement well, so that was a good thing to see,” said Lamar School head coach Jacob Ginn. “Didn’t hear my voice much tonight because we got to have life come from our guys and that was our big thing tonight. When we want to turn it on when it matters it’s got to be a team effort and the guys on the floor figured it out and we did a good job of that.”
Lamar couldn’t have asked for a better start. The Raiders began the game on a 18-0 run and never looked back. Lamar held a 20-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Generals went on a 10-3 run to cut the Lamar lead down to 23-15, but that was as close as they would get as the Raiders ended the first half on a 13-4 run to take a 36-19 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was the difference as Lamar outscored Newton Academy 17-3 to take a commanding 53-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter and put the game out of reach.
Tucker Dunn had a game-high 15 points to lead Lamar, while Jeremy Booker added 12 points and Hamm Haarala chipped in 11 points for the Raiders.
“The guys had a dominate win, but now the real work is ahead as we get deep into our district play. Hopefully we can draw some confidence from this game,” Ginn said. “If we’re going to make a push like I know we can it’s got to come from the guys on the floor doing that work.”
Ethan Woodham had seven points to lead Newton Academy (7-6).
