A local man is facing felony charges after a shooting Wednesday morning left one woman injured.
Meridian Assistant Police Chief Dareall Thompson said officers received a call shortly after 2 a.m. about a woman being shot in the 200 block of 23rd Street, which is the Eastern Gardens apartment complex. The woman was alert and able to communicate with police and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, he said.
Law enforcement identified the suspect, who had fled the scene, and found him after a brief search, Thompson said.
“He was located in a creek along the railroad tracks right behind Eastern Gardens apartments,” he said.
The suspect will be charged with aggravated domestic violence, Thompson said. His name and bond amount will be released once he is formally charged.
Thompson said he wants to recognize the Meridian Police officers who responded to the call and showed courage by searching the wooded area in the dark for an armed suspect. Their actions allowed for the department to both catch the suspect and retrieve the weapon used in the shooting, he said.
Wednesday’s shooting was an isolated incident stemming from a domestic violence situation, and Thompson said he wants to encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence to speak out and use the community resources available to them. Care Lodge, a domestic violence shelter in Meridian, has resources for victims, he said, or they can call Meridian Police Department.
