PHILADELPHIA, Miss. — Jeremiah McMillian picked the right night to have a career night for West Lauderdale.
McMillian poured in a game-high 37 points as the Knights raced past Tishomingo County 77-54 at the Neshoba Central Christmas Classic on Monday night.
“We’ve worked hard all year if trying to stay in front of the ball and our division is pretty good, so we’ve worked to try give ourselves chances,” said first year West Lauderdale coach Jerry Byrd. “We don’t have a lot of depth, but we want to create some turnovers and get some points in transition and steal some points while we can.”
West Lauderdale (12-4) never trailed.
The Knights jumped out to a 15-4 lead to began the game and eventually held a 15-8 lead at the end of the opening period.
West Lauderdale followed with a 13-4 run in the second quarter to extend their lead to 28-12 midway through. The Knights would hold a 34-19 lead at halftime.
To begin the third quarter Tishomingo County trimmed the lead down 36-25, but that was as close as the Braves would get.
West Lauderdale ended the quarter on a 15-6 run to take a commanding 53-31 lead. McMillian scored 17 points in the period.
The Knights went on a 10-3 run to begin the fourth quarter to extend their lead to 63-34 to seal the game.
Camron Gonzalez added 17 points for West Lauderdale.
“Camron and Jeramiah are our two best players, so we’re trying to find our third and fourth guy that can score. I believe that anybody can guard two players and need someone to step up,” Byrd said. “We didn’t have to do that tonight and I’m proud of the guys for playing hard and played well defensively. We’ve lost a couple of games we’ve should’ve won, but with our division being so tough maybe we can get in the top four and get into the playoffs.”
Kayson McNutt had 26 points to lead Tishomingo County (4-9).
