In a signing ceremony at the MHS multipurpose building, McCann said Clark Atlanta was the best fit for him, and he looks forward to getting started there after graduation.

“The reason I chose Clark Atlanta is it really fits me and they treated me like family,” he said. “When I first got there I felt like I was at home.”

McCann said thanks is owed to both his Wildcat teammates and coaches for their support and their efforts in helping him reach the college level.

MHS assistant football coach Austin Davis said McCann’s final season with the Wildcats showed his character as he stayed positive through a difficult year. The Wildcats went 0-5 in district play with an overall season record of 2-8.

“He’s a resilient young man. Last year didn’t go how any of us wanted it to, but he had a good attitude. Really got to the qualities that make him the player that he is,” Davis said. “He’s a very versatile player, plays offense and defense, and I know he’s worked really hard for this day.”

Meridian High Principal Sherrod Miller said seeing a student advance their education beyond high school is always worth celebrating. McCann, he said, will be an asset to Clark Atlanta University, both on and off the field.

“Good luck, Corey. Clark Atlanta is an awesome university,” he said.

Cheyenne Trussell, athletic director for Meridian Public School District, told McCann Meridian is home and will always be there should he need it. Moving beyond high school, he said, there will be challenges and adversity to overcome, but the most important goal is to leave with a college degree.
