Meridianites looking for a refreshing smoothie or nutritious snack are in luck after Tropical Smoothie Cafe opened with a ribbon cutting Friday on North Frontage Road. Operations Director Nikkie Cothren said the Meridian storefront is the fifth such location to open in Mississippi in the past two years, and the franchise is excited to be in the Queen City. To help kick off the store’s opening, Cothren said the public is encouraged to stop by this weekend to take advantage of special offers, including a free smoothie with the purchase of any bowl or a wrap.

“So many people don’t know that we have food, but we do have wraps, quesadillas, flatbreads, obviously our bowls are a big hit,” she said. “The acai bowl is our biggest seller.”

The store is also offering free smoothies for a year to the first 25 customers after opening 8 a.m. Saturday.

“I do just want to thank everyone again so much for taking time to come out and celebrate us and thank the city of Meridian for allowing us to be here and thank the patrons that have already come out and supported us,” she said. “We greatly appreciate each and every one of you.”

Meridian Mayor Percy Bland thanked Cothren for investing in the city and helping move Meridian forward. The city, he said, is there to help whenever it is needed.

“We just want you to know that we will be here at all times to support you and your team, to make your investment in Meridian a healthy one and good for our economy and also good for your business,” he said. “So thank you for investing in our city.”

Helen Sims, membership director for the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation said Tropical Smoothie Cafe was one of the businesses who reached out to her looking to get involved when it is usually she who makes the first contact. The effort shows the business wants to be involved in the community and wants to give back, she said.

“I just really appreciate a business coming to the city and wanting to give back to the community and getting involved,” she said, “and so we really appreciate it.”
