Both city of Meridian and town of Marion offices will be open Saturday for residents needing to register to vote as the deadline to register and be eligible to participate in upcoming municipal elections nears.
According to Secretary of State Michael Watson’s office, voters must register by Monday, May 5, if they plan to vote in the June 3 general elections. Mail-in voter registration applications must be postmarked by May 5 as well.
Meridian City Hall and Marion Town Hall will be open 8 a.m. to noon Saturday for those needing to register or update an existing voter registration with new information. Voter registrations must be updated when the voter moves to a new address.
Voters in both municipalities are tasked with electing new leadership, with six races each. In Meridian, voters will choose a new mayor and five city council members to serve a four-year term. Ward 4 Councilwoman Romande Walker is the only Meridian candidate going unopposed into the June 3 general election, with the rest facing at least one challenger.
In Marion, Mayor Larry Gill is running unopposed for a second term in office after no other candidates qualified to run against him. Marion voters will also choose five aldermen to manage the budget and make decisions for the community.
While Meridian residents elect City Council members from their individual wards, Marion aldermen run at-large, meaning the entire town gets to vote for each candidate. Marion candidates, including both aldermen and mayor, run as nonpartisan, meaning no primary elections were needed to select party nominees.
