Circuit Clerk warns of jury phone scammers

The Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk’s Office is encouraging residents to spread the word as scam telephone callers have targeted local residents with a new script about jury duty.

Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson said the scammers can sound quite convincing, using residents names and falsely giving the names of real law enforcement.

“Please be advised that you would not ever receive a phone call advising you owe money when it comes to jury duty,” Johnson said. “They have been known to identify themselves with current law enforcement names, plus using a ‘caller ID’ number reflecting the local sheriff or police department.

“Their scare tactics are after you personal information and money, so please do not engage in any dialogue and hang up the phone,” she added.

The timing of the calls coincide with the U.S. District Court mailing out postcards to Meridian and Lauderdale County residents stating they could be called for jury duty sometime in the future, Johnson said. Her office is asking residents to spread the word to protect seniors and other vulnerable populations from the scam.

“Call our office if you have any questions concerning the legitimacy of a jury situation,” she said.
