In emergencies, time is of the essence. Rapid response and quick intervention can mean the difference between life and death.
A new partnership between Metro Ambulance Service and the Meridian Fire Department is intended to make every second count with a medical substation now in full operation at the former location of Meridian Fire Station 6.
“This is something that has never been done in Lauderdale County before,” Meridian Fire Chief Michael Evans said during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the site on Thursday afternoon. “We at the Meridian Fire Department are always trying to think outside the box on how we can improve the quality of life of the citizens here in Meridian.”
About a year ago, Evans approached the Mayor and Meridian City Council about hiring a paramedic for the fire department. After receiving approval, the fire chief spoke to officials at Metro Ambulance Service about the proposal.
The substation is the end result. In addition to a staff of paramedics available 24/7, the location also has a sprint truck and ambulance.
“Putting an ambulance on this side of town cuts response time (to medical emergencies) down to 3 or 4 minutes, which can mean a lot to somebody having a heart attack on 45th Avenue,” Evans said.
Metro Ambulance Service Executive Director Kevin Smith agrees.
“This station will benefit not just those who live within the location area, but everyone in Meridian and Lauderdale County to lessen response time when we answer calls in this area,” Smith said. “We thank the fire chief for his forward thinking, and the support from the Mayor and City Council and (Lauderdale County) Board of Supervisors, and the community. We’re going to be here to serve y’all.”
