Meridian business owner Jatara Smith announced Friday she is running as a candidate for City Council representing Ward 5.
Smith, who owns Aura 5 LLC, an internet cafe on Fifth Street in downtown Meridian, said her platform is to revitalize the downtown area, create opportunities for better jobs and housing and improve connectivity throughout the city by extending Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
“Crime cannot just be a law enforcement issue—we must give our citizens a real chance at life, with quality jobs, accessible housing, and thriving businesses,” she said in a news release announcing her campaign. “Ward 5 is the heart of Meridian, and with the right leadership, we can make it a model for progress and opportunity.”
As a candidate, Smith said her approach is one of both action and accountability that will deliver results while working for the people of Meridian.
“Our community deserves leadership that works for the people, listens to their needs, and turns vision into action,” she said. “Together, we can create a stronger and more prosperous Meridian for everyone.”
Municipal elections for both Meridian and Marion are scheduled for later this year. Primary elections are April 1 with a runoff date of April 22 if needed. The general election is set for June 3.
