Local schools cancel Friday classes

Winter weather is expected to impact the East Mississippi region Thursday night and Friday, with the potential for ice and other hazards on the roads.

In expectation of the storm, Meridian Public School District announced its campuses and administrative offices will be closed Friday, Jan. 10.

“Difficult travel conditions are possible and travel is strongly discouraged. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority,” said Matt Davis, Public Relations Director for MPSD.

Lauderdale County School District announced it will also close campuses Friday in anticipation of the weather. In a statement posted to social media, Superintendent John-Mark Cain said the decision to close was reached after looking at forecasted travel conditions and consulting with Lauderdale County Emergency Management.

Students at Meridian Community College will also be impacted by the weather as the college announced the cancellation of classes Friday as well.
