Dangerous cold expected later this week

A storm system from the Gulf of Mexico is expected to bring dangerous winter weather later in the week, and citizens in Meridian and the surrounding area should expect to feel the impact as early as Thursday, lasting until Saturday.
The average temperature for the area will be mid to upper 30s. The high average will be around 40 to 43 degrees while the lows are expected to be in the lower 20s, potentially dropping into the high teens.
David Cox, the lead meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Jackson, said, “In these environments sometimes clouds, rain and Northeastern winds could lock in a bit colder temperature than anticipated.”
As the storm system moves in, residents should be wary of freezing rain and sleet. Cox said there is a low chance for a mixture of sleet and freezing rain, and as of Monday, there is low travel impact. This means it’s unlikely the weather will significantly disrupt travel plans; however, it is more probable in areas north and west of Meridian on Thursday and Friday.
Residents should still use caution if they have plans to travel during the winter storm. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says rain freezes on contact with cold surfaces which creates ice on roads, walkways, trees and power lines. MSEMA advises against any prolonged exposure outside during this time, as it could lead to frostbite and hypothermia.
Residents are encouraged to stay inside as much as possible, and if they must go outside be sure to dress appropriately by wearing multiple layers, mittens and even scarves if available.
