Lauderdale County Sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday announced a suspect is in custody following a Christmas Eve shooting that left one person dead and two injured.

Sheriff Ward Calhoun said deputies and Metro Ambulance personnel responded to an E-911 call of people shot in the 9500 block of Northeast Cole Road at approximately 7:10 p.m. Tuesday. One gunshot victim had already been taken to a hospital in a private vehicle and another was transported by Metro Ambulance.

“The third victim was nonresponsive, and the Lauderdale County Coroner Stella McMahan was contacted,” Calhoun said via text message.

Deputies located the vehicle the suspected shooter was driving at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening in the 7000 block of Welch Road, Calhoun said, and worked to secure search warrants for both the residence and the vehicle.

Joseph Spinks, 50, of Toomsuba was arrested and charged with murder around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday and booked into Lauderdale County Detention Center. He is being held without bond, Calhoun said.

“Our investigation is ongoing and additional charges will be filed as the investigation continues,” he said.
