IRS urges residents to learn about tax fraud schemes

National Tax Security Awareness Week 2024 is observed annually from Dec., 2–6, and the IRS Criminal Investigation Atlanta Field Office is urging taxpayers to take the opportunity to learn how to protect themselves against tax fraud and other scams.

 

The weeklong observance emphasizes the important of protecting sensitive financial information from identity theft and tax scams.

Taxpayers and businesses can visit the National Tax Security Awareness Week site at irs.gov/newsroom/national-tax-security-awareness-week-2024 to learn how they protect themselves from several types of scams. The website includes information on online phishing, identity theft, and holiday scams. Additionally, the site links to 18 YouTube videos covering how individuals, tax professionals and businesses can protect themselves.

 

 

 

“IRS-CI agents are committed to working on behalf of the taxpayer to investigate and help prosecute those who commit financial fraud upon them,” said Atlanta Field Office Special Agent in Charge Demetrius Hardeman. “This week allows us to highlight financial and identity schemes that taxpayers need to be aware of to deny criminals the opportunity to make them fraud victims.”

 

IRS-CI encourages the public to share information regarding known or suspected tax and financial fraud. To report a suspected crime, taxpayers can visit IRS.gov or contact the CI Atlanta Field Office by email at atlantafieldoffice@ci.irs.gov.
