A woman accused of helping her brother evade law enforcement in a fatal hit-and-run incident has been arrested, the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday.

In a news release, Sheriff Ward Calhoun said Vicky L. Waters was charged with accessory after the fact and released after posting a $25,000 bond.

Waters is alleged to have helped her brother, William Joe Garrett, avoid arrest in connection with an Oct. 22 hit-and-run incident on King Road that injured 79-year-old John Culpepper. Culpepper died several days later on Oct. 24 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Garrett, 53, was identified as a suspect after Meridian Police Department released images of two suspects and a vehicle asking for the public’s help in identifying them.

Acting Capt. Dareall Thompson said Garrett, who was arrested Monday, has been charged by MPD with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and is being held without bond. Garrett will face a preliminary hearing in Meridian Municipal Court next week, he said.

Thompson said MPD thanks the community for helping investigators with the case.

“We do appreciate the public calling and the community providing these tips,” he said.

Calhoun said Water’s case will be presented to the next available grand jury for potential indictment.
