Area soccer players advance to NJCAA semifinals

Four former area high school soccer standouts, all members of the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs, are headed to the NJCAA Final Four in Division II women’s soccer.
Holmes picked up a 3-1 win over Schoolcraft Monday night in pool play to improve to 17-4-2 on the season. In their opening game in pool play Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs won 3-1 over Phoenix College.
Members of the Lady Bulldogs include former West Lauderdale High School soccer standouts Kristen Phillips and Bailee Fairley, Kaylee Avant of Newton County High School and Katie Smith of Clarkdale High School.
The Lady Bulldogs started play in Pool D of the 2024 NJCAA Women’s Division II National Tournament being held in Huntsville, Alabama. Receiving an at-large bid to the tournament, Holmes came in as the fifth seed among the 12 teams with Phoenix the fourth seed and Schoolcraft ninth.
The winners of the tournament’s Pools A-D will play in the semifinals on Thursday with the finals on Saturday.
According to a press release from Holmes Community College Athletics, Olivia Tribolet put the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the 11th minute of Monday’s match against Schoolcraft, giving Holmes the 1-0 lead. Schoolcraft scored in the 14th minute on a corner to tie the match at one.
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good in the 52nd minute when Phillips scored on a Fairley assist. Fairley scored on a Phillips assist in the 88th minute to end all scoring.
Addi Roberts started in goal and finished with four saves, while Smith played the second half and had one save.
Going into the tournament, Phillips led the Bulldogs for the season with 21 goals scored and 11 assists. Fairley had 15 goals and nine assists, and Avant had scored seven goals with five assists. Smith, who splits time in goal with Roberts, finished regular season play with 33 saves.
