ATLANTA (AP) — Hunter Dickinson scored 28 points and Bill Self became the winningest coach in Kansas history as the No. 1 Jayhawks pulled away from Michigan State for a 77-69 victory in the Champions Classic. Spartans forward Jaxon Kohler hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 52 with just under nine minutes remaining. KJ Adams Jr. hit a pair of free throws to put Kansas ahead to stay. Frankie Fidler scored 15 points to lead the Spartans. Self improved to 591-143 in his 22nd season coaching the Jayhawks, pushing him past Phog Allen’s mark of 590-219 in 39 seasons.

Texas State used a 14-4 run, capped by Dylan Dawson’s 3-pointer, to pull to 72-68 with 1:32 left. WACO, Texas (AP) — Jayden Nunn had 19 points with five 3-pointers to lead seven Baylor players scoring in double figures and the 12th-ranked Bears won their home opener 104-67 over Sam Houston. The 2-1 Bears got double-doubles from Miami transfer Norchad Omier and freshman VJ Edgecombe. Duke transfer Jeremy Roach had 12 points and eight assists Tuesday night while Josh Ojianwuna’s 11 points included a dunk only 10 seconds into the game that put Baylor ahead to stay.  Lamar Wilkerson had 19 points for reigning Conference USA champion Sam Houston.

ATLANTA (AP) — Bill Self brushed off becoming the winningest coach in Kansas basketball history, even as he surpassed the guy whose name is on the arena. The 61-year-old Self says it just means he’s old. Of course, he’s much more than that. Self claimed the top spot at one of college basketball’s most storied programs when No. 1 Kansas held off Michigan State 77-69 at the Champions Classic in Atlanta. Self improved to 591-143 in his 22nd season coaching the Jayhawks, pushing beyond Phog Allen’s mark of 590-219 in 39 seasons on the Kansas sideline. The Jayhawks, of course, play at Allen Fieldhouse — named in honor of the Hall of Fame coach whose brilliant career spanned most of first half of the 20th century.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gabe Madsen scored 24 points, Mike Sharavjamts added 19 and Utah pulled away in the second half to beat Queens University 96-65 on Tuesday night. Madsen, who had 12 3s over Utah’s first two games, was 5 of 12 from the arc. Utah, which made a school-record 19 3s in each of its first two games, hit 14 on 30 attempts against the Royals (2-1). The Utes (3-0) shot 49% overall. Sharavjamts, the first Mongolian player to play Division I basketball and who played previously at Dayton and San Francisco, had 19 points. Chris Ashby scored 14 points to lead Queens.

UNDATED (AP) — Oregon stayed on top in the second batch of College Football Playoff rankings, while the new poll shoved Georgia completely out of the bracket after its lopsided loss to Mississippi. Led by the Ducks, then Ohio State, the Big Ten captured four of the top five spots. The string was interrupted only by Texas of the Southeastern Conference, which was slotted in at No. 3. Georgia’s loss to Ole Miss dropped the Bulldogs from third to all the way to 12th, but they would be the first team out because No. 13 Boise State of the Mountain West would receive an automatic bid and the 12th seed as the fifth-best conference champion.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Keyshawn Hall scored 20 of his 26 points in the second half, Jordan Ivy-Curry finished with 22 points and Darius Johnson added 21 to help UCF beat Florida Atlantic 100-94. Baba Miller made back-to-back baskets to give FAU its first lead of the second half at 68-67 with 9:42 to play but Hall hit a 3-pointer 17 seconds later to spark an 11-1 run and the Knights led the rest of the way. Leland Walker led the Owls with 20 points, Caleb Glenn scored 17 and Miller finished with 14 points. KyKy added 11 points and Matas Vokietaitis 10. UCF (3-0) scored in triple figures for the first time since March 7, 2014, against Houston.

UNDATED (AP) — Seventh-ranked BYU and the Big 12 are taking games down to the wire. No other conference is keeping things so close this season. The 9-0 Cougars are one of four remaining undefeated FBS teams after their 22-21 win at Utah on Will Ferrin’s 44-yard field goal with three seconds left. That was the 13th game involving a Big 12 team, and second for BYU, when the winning team scored the go-ahead points in the final minute. The next-closest league is the Big Ten with 10 games decided with one minute of less remaining in the fourth quarter.
