A former bookkeeper at Quitman High School pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of embezzlement, State Auditor Shad White’s office announced in a news release.

Memory Smith was arrested in August on allegations she took money from the school’s activity fund for her own use. At the time, White’s office said Smith could see a maximum penalty of $5,000 and 20 years in jail if convicted.

Following her guilty plea Tuesday, Smith was given a 7-year suspended sentence, five years of probation and $2,000 in fines.

“I’m thankful to the tireless efforts from the investigators and prosecutors for the joint work required to bring this case to a close,” White said.
