LOS ANGELES (AP) — Josh Cohen had 19 points and Saint Thomas hit a late 3-pointer to help Southern California hold off Idaho State 75-69. Dylan Darling made both ends of a one-and-one following his layup to give Idaho State a 58-57 lead with 8:45 left to play. USC (2-0) moved back ahead by three, but Evan Otten hit 1 of 2 free throws and followed with a dunk to tie the game at 63 with 4:02 remaining. Clark Slajchert made 2 of 3 free throws and Cohen hit a jumper following a Bengals turnover to give the Trojans a 68-65 lead with 2:25 left. Idaho State (0-2) turned a missed 3-pointer by Slajchert into a fastbreak layup by Jake O’Neil to get within a point. Darling’s 3-pointer with 18 seconds left made it a two-possession game.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Jaxon Kohler came off the bench to post career highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds and Michigan State warmed up for a meeting with top-ranked Kansas with a 96-60 victory over Niagara on Thursday night. Michigan State takes on the Jayhawks on Tuesday at the Champions Classic in Atlanta. Kohler was 8-of-12 shooting with the junior posting his second career double-double. Jase Richardson added 12 points, Tre Holloman and Frankie Fidler 11 each and Jaden Akins 10. Olumide Adelodun scored 13 points, Jahari Williamson 12 and Jhaylon Martinez 10 for the Purple Eagles.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Max Klesmit hit six 3-pointers and scored 26 points to help Wisconsin defeat Montana State 79-67 in the Bobcats’ season opener. Klesmit made 6 of 11 shots from outside the arc and 1 of 4 from inside for Wisconsin (2-0). He made all six of his free throws as the Badgers buried 20 of 21 attempts. Graduate transfer John Tonje scored 11 of his 13 in the first half for Wisconsin. John Blackwell added 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Kamari McGee came off the bench to score 11 on 5-for-7 shooting with a 3-pointer. Reserve Brian Goracke topped Montana State with 14 points.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Pryce Sandfort had career highs with six 3-pointers and 22 points to lead Iowa to an 89-74 victory over Southern. Payton Sandfort scored 17 points to go with eight rebounds and seven assists for Iowa (2-0). Owen Freeman added 15 points, Josh Dix had 14 and Drew Thelwell 12. Iowa shot 32 of 60 (53%) from the floor and made 18 of 40 (45%) from long range. Seven Hawkeyes made at least one 3. AJ Barnes scored 14 points to lead Southern (0-2).
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Harmoni Turner scored 24 points, former Hoosier Mona Zaric had a game-saving block and two game-clinching free throws in overtime and Harvard upset No. 25 Indiana 72-68. Turner opened the overtime with a pair of layups and led the rest of the way as the Hoosiers had five turnovers, giving them 27 for the game. The last turnover was losing a held ball with three seconds left and Zaric, a senior who transferred after her sophomore season, made two free throws with 2.4 to go. Alayna Rocco hit a wide-open 3-point from the right corner with 19 seconds left in regulation to pull Harvard into a tie at 63 and then Zaric blocked Chloe Moore-McNeil’s layup attempt with a second left. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Kaylene Smikle scored 20 points and No. 18 Maryland used a big second quarter to cruise to a 70-47 home-opening win over Coppin State. Smikle, an All-Big Ten selection at Rutgers last year, hit four 3-pointers for the Terps. Laila Lawrence led the Eagles with 16 points. Maryland blew the game open by outscoring Coppin State 25-4 in the second quarter to lead 40-16 at the half. The Terps went 8 of 14 from the field with three 3s and 6 of 6 from the foul line. In 15 shots the Eagles hit a 3 before missing their last 13 shots and made 1 of 2 free throws.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Adalia McKenzie and Makira Cook each scored 20 points and Kendall Bostic scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half to help Illinois beat No. 19 Florida State 83-74. Florida State made just 3 of 16 from the field and committed six turnovers to open the game as Illinois never trailed and jumped to a 16-6 lead. Bostic was 6-of-6 shooting before the break as Illinois led by as many as 17 points before taking a 43-34 lead into halftime. Makayla Timpson made a jumper that cut Florida State’s deficit to five points with just under 6 minutes to play but Cook answered with a layup and the Seminoles got no closer. UNDATED (AP) — Indiana can clinch its first season with double-digit wins in school history Saturday when the unbeaten and eighth-ranked Hoosiers host defending national champion Michigan as the highest-profile game in this week’s Big Ten schedule. Another intriguing Big Ten matchup has No. 6 Penn State seeking to bounce back from its loss to No. 3 Ohio State when it hosts Washington. Penn State seems to have a clear path into the 12-team College Football Playoff field if it wins the rest of its regular-season games.
