FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) — John Calipari won his debut as Arkansas coach when the 16th-ranked Razorbacks held off a second-half rally by Lipscomb and pulled away for a 76-60 victory. Freshman guard Boogie Fland scored 17 points and Florida Atlantic transfer Johnell Davis added 15 for Arkansas. Calipari, who left Southeastern Conference rival Kentucky after last season, had previously been booed incessantly whenever stepping foot in Bud Walton Arena. That changed when Eric Musselman, who coached Arkansas to three Sweet 16s in five seasons, departed last spring and Calipari bolted from the bluegrass of Kentucky for the foothills of the Ozarks. His new team looked a lot like his old ones.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Jalen Reed scored a career-high 24 points, Cam Carter added 21 and LSU won its season opener with a 95-60 victory over UL Monroe. Reed shot 8 of 9 from the field, made all eight free-throw attempts and grabbed eight rebounds. Carter was 7-of-12 shooting and made four of LSU’s 10 3-pointers. Curtis Givens III also made four 3s and finished with 15 points for LSU, which shot 51% (34 of 67). Dji Bailey added 13 points. Jalen Bolden scored 25 points to lead UL Monroe (1-1). LSU has won all nine games in the series.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is practicing in a limited capacity despite a strained left hamstring. The Gators officially list Lagway as questionable to play at No. 5 Texas on Saturday. Lagway was carted off the field in the second quarter of last weekend’s 34-20 loss to second-ranked Georgia. He tweaked his hamstring during a 3-yard run in the second quarter. He returned to the sideline in the second half with his legged wrapped and using crutches. Coach Billy Napier says Lagway’s injury was “less significant” than initially feared and adds that he’s “giving it his best shot” to play.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A real injury or a fake? It’s almost always hard to tell these days in college football. That’s why Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey recently sent around a memo to his membership that if they’re feigning injuries to cause a time out, knock it off. Coaches throughout the league have backed Sankey’s stance even if they’ve been accused of their players faking it on the field. Mississippi acknowledged critics who complain they use the tactic and have shared relevant information with the SEC for review.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Miles Kelly scored 21 points, Denver Jones added 16 and No. 11 Auburn cruised to a 94-43 season-opening home victory over Vermont on Wednesday night. Chaney Johnson had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, who have now won 55 consecutive non-conference home games. Auburn led Vermont by 25 at halftime and opened the second half on a 35-4 run. Kelly, a Georgia Tech transfer, hit seven 3-pointers — more than any Auburn player had in a single game last season. Seth Joba led Vermont (1-1) with eight points, while Illeri Ayo-Faleye added seven. The Catamounts’ 43 points tied for the fewest they have scored in a game under 14th-year head coach John Becker.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — No one can deny Florida’s improvement this season — not even coach Billy Napier’s most ardent critics. The Gators have made strides since lopsided losses to Miami and Texas A&M during the first month of the season. Napier shored up his shaky defense, found a potential star in freshman quarterback DJ Lagway and developed young talent on both sides of the ball. It’s the kind of progress that has caught everyone’s attention, inside and outside the program. And it should earn Napier at least another season. No matter what happens down the stretch in November, the Gators seem ready to move forward with Napier as their head coach.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins has had the charges against her dismissed, according to online court records. Watkins was arrested and charged with assault and kidnapping on Aug. 31. She has been suspended from the women’s college basketball team since. There was no immediate update on her status with the team. The defending national champions opened the season Monday night with a 68-62 win over Michigan. South Carolina faces No. 9 N.C. State in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday.

UNDATED (AP) — One of the nitpicks about the first College Football Playoff rankings was that the committee undervalued unbeaten Indiana. The Hoosiers’ No. 8 ranking puts them fourth among Big Ten teams. The Hoosiers have won all nine of their games by at least 14 points and they’ve outscored their opponents by a combined 419-123 amid criticism that their schedule is somewhat lightweight. First-year coach Curt Cignetti appears content to bide his time. He said it would be the kiss of death to worry about the conversation around his program. The Hoosiers host Michigan on Saturday before playing at Ohio State.
