LAS VEGAS (AP) — Bruce Thornton scored 20 points, and the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the 19th-ranked Texas Longhorns 80-72. Micah Parrish added 17 points and six rebounds for the Buckeyes, who led wire-to-wire and shot 55.6% in the second half. Devin Royal had 16 points and John Mobley Jr. scored 14 off the bench, leading Ohio State to a 33-10 advantage in bench scoring. Freshman Tre Johnson led all scorers with 29 points and five rebounds for the Longhorns.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyler Bilodeau scored 18 points in his UCLA debut after transferring from Oregon State, and the 22nd-ranked Bruins routed Rider 85-50 in their season opener. Kobe Johnson, who transferred from crosstown-rival USC, added 12 points and eight rebounds. T.J. Weeks Jr. led Rider with 15 points, hitting a game-high four 3-pointers. The Bruins led all the way, running off 10 straight points to end the first half ahead 41-23. Bilodeau got hot to start the second half, scoring 10 points in the first five minutes to extend UCLA’s lead to 53-32.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Chloe Kitts had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Tessa Johnson scored 15 points as top-ranked South Carolina defeated scrappy Michigan 68-62 on Monday night in the Hall of Fame Series. Joyce Edwards added 10 points for defending champion South Carolina. Syla Swords led Michigan with 27 points and 12 rebounds and Jordan Hobbs had 19 points. South Carolina was favored by 21 1/2 points at BetMGM Sportsbook. Michigan tried to become the first team since Big Ten Conference rival Iowa in 2023 national semifinals to beat the Gamecocks.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Fletcher Loyer scored 21 points to lead five players in double figures as No. 14 Purdue beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 90-73. Also scoring in double figures were Trey Kaufman-Renn with 15 points, Myles Colvin with 14, Daniel Jacobsen with 13 and Braden Smith with 12. Kaufman-Renn had nine rebounds and Smith had 15 assists. Owen Dease scored 20 for the Islanders. Garry Clark added 14 points. The Boilermakers led 49-33 at halftime, but the Islanders got as close as three points in the second half before Purdue pulled away. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot 54% in the second half to get back into the game.
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Kwame Evans Jr. scored 23 points and Nate Bittle added 16 points and 11 rebounds to help Oregon beat UC Riverside 91-76 in the season opener for both teams. Stanford transfer Brandon Angel had 17 points and TJ Bamba, who started at Washington State before playing last season at Villanova, scored 12 and grabbed seven rebounds for Oregon. Bamba hit a jumper and Angel converted a three-point play that gave the Ducks the lead for good before Jackson Sheldstad hit a 3-pointer and Bamba stole a pass and went the other way for a layup to cap a 10-0 spurt that made it 36-28 with 5:55 to play in the first half. Barrington Hargress, last season’s Big West freshman of the year, led UC Riverside with 20 points.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chibuzo Agbo had 14 points, reserve Matt Knowling scored 13 points and Southern Cal cruised to a 77-51 victory over Chattanooga in a season-opening victory for first-year coach Eric Musselman. Agbo made 4 of 9 shots from 3-point range and 5 of 11 overall for USC. Knowling made all six of his shots and his only free throw. Musselman takes over the Trojans program as they head from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten this season. Musselman most recently spent five seasons at Arkansas where he led the Razorbacks to a 111-59 record. He has the 10th best winning percentage of all active Division I coaches with at least nine seasons. Honor Huff scored 17 points to lead Chattanooga.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Danny Wolf scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Tre Donaldson added 16 points and seven assists and Michigan never trailed in its 101-53 season-opening win over Cleveland State in coach Dusty May’s debut for the Wolverines. May — who set a program record for wins (126) in his six-year run at Florida Atlantic and led the Owls to their first Final Four appearance in 2023 — took over after the Wolverines went 8-24 under former Michigan star Juwan Howard last season. Seven different Michigan players scored during an 18-2 run that made it 45-21 with 2:31 left in the first half and the Vikings trailed by at least 23 points the rest of the way. Dylan Arnett scored seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Cleveland State.
MADISON, Wisc. (AP) — John Tonje scored 23 points, John Blackwell added 16 and Wisconsin took control in the second half and subdued Holy Cross for an 85-61 season-opening win on Monday night. Nolan Winter added 15 points making all six of his shot attempts, two of which came from beyond 3-point range. Winter also made his lone free throw. Gabe Warren scored 23 points for Holy Cross and reserve Deandre Williams scored 11.
