TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Caleb Love had 17 points and six assists, Jaden Bradley added 15 points and No. 10 Arizona opened coach Tommy Lloyd’s fourth season with a 93-64 win over Canisius. Arizona jumped on the Golden Griffins from the start, scoring the first 13 points during an opening 20-2 run on its way to a 52-30 halftime lead. The Wildcats never let the lead get under 18 after that early burst to win their 18th straight home opener. Arizona dominated inside, outscoring Canisius 48-12 in the paint while grabbing 18 more rebounds. Paul McMillan IV led Canisius with 20 points.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Keshon Gilbert scored 17 points and Tamin Lipsey added 16 as No. 5 Iowa State routed Mississippi Valley State 83-44 for its 28th straight home win. Saint Mary’s transfer Joshua Jefferson added 10 points, six rebounds and four steals in his first game with the Cyclones. Donovan Sanders had 12 points and Greg Moore added 10 for the Delta Devils, who won one game last season and are picked to finish last in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Cyclones led 44-21 at half, and the bulge grew to as many as 42 points in the last five minutes.
HOUSTON (AP) — L.J. Cryer scored 16 points, Mylik Wilson added 15 points and No. 4 Houston opened its season with a 97-40 win over Jackson State. J’Wan Roberts had 14 points and six rebounds, Ramon Walker Jr. chipped in 10 points and Milos Uzan, a transfer from Oklahoma, had eight points, seven rebounds and 10 assists for Houston. The Cougars shot 58%, including 12 of 20 on 3-pointers. The win was Houston’s 23rd straight home win, the longest active streak in the nation. Jalen Tatum scored 14 points to lead Jackson State, which shot 28%.
Orlando, Fla. (AP) — Darius Johnson scored 24 points and assisted on a go-ahead slam dunk with less than a minute remaining to lead UCF to a 64-61 win over No. 13 Texas A&M. Johnson had five assists, including the pass to Benny Williams that helped put the Knights ahead 62-61 with 45.5 seconds left. The Aggies didn’t score in the final 2:13. Jordan Ivy-Curry added 16 points for UCF. Keyshawn Hall scored 10. Pharrel Payne led the Aggies with 15 points and had six rebounds. Wade Taylor IV had 13 points and seven assists but made only 4 of his 15 shots.
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson was back on the court for No. 1 Kansas. His next game is going to be a more difficult challenge. Dickinson missed two exhibition games because of a minor injury. But the 7-foot-2 center returned to the Jayhawks’ lineup for their opener, scoring 16 points in an 87-57 victory over Howard. Next up is a matchup with No. 9 North Carolina on Friday night at Allen Fieldhouse. Dickinson went 5 for 8 from the field in 21 minutes against Howard. He also had six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Reserves Sebastian Rancik scored 13 points and Trevor Baskin scored 12 points and Colorado took control after halftime and beat Eastern Washington 76-56 in a season opener for both teams. Javon Ruffin added 12 points for Colorado and Andrej Jakimovski 11. Nic McClain scored 16 points for the Eagles and Vice Zanki scored 12 shooting 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Colorado turned the momentum in the second half and in an eight-minute span outscored the Eagles 23-5. Trevor Baskin’s layup with 5:55 remaining gave Colorado its first double-digit lead at 58-47.
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Bryce Thompson scored 22 points and Oklahoma State pulled away in the second half to defeat Green Bay 89-76. The season opener for both teams featured the debut of Steve Lutz as coach of the Cowboys against first-year Green Bay coach Doug Gottlieb, a 2000 OSU graduate and holder of the program’s single-game, season and career assist records. After leading 39-38 at halftime, the Cowboys scored 50 points in the first 18 minutes of the second half before going scoreless in the final two minutes. Thompson led the second-half barrage with 13 points, including 3-for-3 from 3-point distance. Oklahoma State outrebounded the Phoenix 26-13 in the second half and scored 15 points after turnovers.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Gabe Madsen hit six 3-pointers and scored 27 points on 8-of-12 shooting, and his younger brother Mason Madsen added 15 points to help Utah beat Alcorn State 100-59 in the season opener for both teams. Mason Madsen made 5 of 9 from 3-point range. Keanu Dawes and Ezra Ausar scored 13 points apiece for Utah. Keionte Cornelius led Alcorn State with eight points. Gabe Madsen was fouled on a 3-point shot and hit all three free throws and followed with a 3-pointer before Mike Sharavjamts and Hunter Erickson each hit from behind the arc in a 12-2 spurt that gave the Runnin’ Utes a 34-22 lead with 5:39 to go until halftime and Alcorn State trailed by double figures the rest of the way.
