DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — No. 7 Duke beat Maine 96-62 in the season opener for both teams. Star freshman Cooper Flagg had 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Blue Devils. Fellow rookie Kon Knueppel had 22 points for Duke. The Blue Devils shot 55.6% for the game. Duke had six players score in double figures. Quion Burns scored 15 points for the Black Bears. Duke led by just 11 at halftime but blew the game open with 11 consecutive points early in the second half. Maine shot 6 for 24 after halftime.

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Toibu Lawal scored 23 points and Mylyjael Poteat scored 14 points and Virginia Tech beat Delaware State 83-60 in a season opener for both teams. Jaydon Young added 13 points for the Hokies. Martaz Robinson scored 30 points for Delaware State with the help of a 16-for-17 shooting effort from the foul line. Ben Burnham, Poteat and Patrick Wessler each sank a pair of free throws in succession and Tyler Johnson converted a layup and Virginia Tech extended the lead to 57-43 with 10:08 left and the Hokies led by double digits the rest of the way.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Andrej Stojakovic scored 16 points, Jovan Blacksher Jr. added 15 for California and the new-look Golden Bears beat Cal State Bakersfield 86-73 in the season opener for both teams. BJ Omot had 13 points, DJ Campbell scored 12 and Mady Sissoko 10 for Cal. Jemel Jones led Cal State Bakersfield with 22 points, Corey Stephenson scored 17 and Marvin McGhee III 13. Shakir McGhee III grabbed 10 rebounds to go with nine points. Jones made a jumper that capped a 9-3 spurt and trimmed CSUB’s deficit to 78-71 with 59 seconds to play but Stojakovic, a Stanford transfer five-star recruit and McDonald’s all-American in 2023, Blacksher, a graduate transfer from Grand Canyon, and DJ Campbell each made 2 of 2 from the free-throw line from there to seal it.

DALLAS (AP) — Boopie Miller scored 21 points to lead six in double-figure scoring, and coach Andy Enfield collected his first win at the helm of SMU with a 96-62 victory over Tarleton State. Enfield was hired on April 1 after 11 seasons with Southern California, where he compiled a 220-147 record. Bubu Benjamin made 14 of 16 free throws and finished with 21 points to lead Tarleton State.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Reserve Jyare Davis scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Donnie Freeman added a double-double and Syracuse fought off Le Moyne in a 86-82 season-opening win for both teams. Chris Bell scored 20 points for Syracuse, J.J. Starling 14, Eddie Lampkin Jr. 10 and Freeman 10 to go along with 11 rebounds. Freds Pauls Bagatskis led Le Moyne — a member of the Northeast Conference — with 18 points, reserves Will Amica 12 and Nate Fouts 11 and Dwayne Koroma and Zek Tekin 10 apiece.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Hildreth scored 15 points to lead Wake Forest over Coppin State 64-49. Hildreth was 4 of 8 from the floor and 3 of 6 from long range. Omaha Biliew added 11 points for Wake Forest, which shot 39% (22 of 56) from the floor. Hunter Sallis, who led Wake Forest in scoring last season averaging 18 points, chipped in 10 points against Coppin State to go with five assists. Tre’Von Spillers had nine points and nine rebounds. Derrius Ward made three 3-pointers and scored 19 points for the Eagles, who shot 28% (17 of 60) from the floor.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Marcus Hill and Breon Pass scored 14 points each and North Carolina State cruised past South Carolina Upstate 97-66 in a season opener. Brandon Huntley-Hatfield scored 13 points and Ben Middlebrooks had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolfpack. NC State led 50-35 at halftime and the Wolfpack stretched their lead to 20-plus in the first four minutes of the second half. With the exception of just a few possessions, the lead was at least 20 throughout the remainder of the game. The lead first reached 30 on a layup by Middlebrooks near the five-minute mark and peaked at 33 when Bryce Heard hit two free throws in the final minute.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jaland Lowe scored 21 points and Ishmael Leggett recorded a double-double and Pitt beat Radford 96-56 in a season-opener for both teams. Leggett scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds. TJ Nesmith made a pair of free throws with 6:02 left before halftime to reduce the Panthers’ lead to 28-24. From there, Pitt used the rest of the half to distance itself and secure the win. Brandon Maclin, Nesmith and Zion Walker led Radford with nine points each.
