Lungs serve a vital purpose, but not everyone knows how to keep their lungs in tip-top shape. To help, the Community Health Improvement Network will host a Lunch and Learn event on how to lower the risk of lung disease and improve overall lung health on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at noon at NorthPark Church located at 7770 Highway 39 North. Those interested in attending can RSVP by calling 601-483-2661.

CHIN Lunch and Learn presenter Dr. Asad Khan, who specializes in interventional pulmonology and critical care medicine at Ochsner Rush Health, said taking simple steps can help lower the risk of developing lung disease.

“Our lungs are an essential part of the respiratory system to help us breathe. As we get older, a decrease in lung function is a normal part of the aging process, but there are steps we can take to keep our lungs healthy,” Khan said. “By eating a balanced diet, exercising, reducing stress, and staying in a smoke-free environment—we can lower the risk of lung disease.”

Founded in 2016, CHIN’s mission is to build collaboration and cooperative efforts that protect and expand access to healthcare for those in underserved areas. The Aug. 27 event is one of several Lunch and Learns the organization has put on with speakers from a variety of medical fields.

CHIN President Beverly Knox said the events have been successful at opening up new lines of communication between the community and doctors and provided residents with information they can use to prevent serious illnesses.

“The most valued part of the Lunch & Learn has been the discussions between community residents and medical professionals. Open dialogue concerning community health and health screening opportunities can help stop or even prevent more serious illnesses,” Knox said.
