A Meridian police officer has been placed on leave after being arrested Tuesday and charged with statutory rape.

In a prepared statement, Police Chief Deborah Naylor Young said Lt. Kevin Boyd surrendered to the Kemper County Sheriff’s Department.

According to a press release from the Kemper County Sheriff’s Department, a complaint was filed with The Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services on May 16 alleging Boyd had molested a 12-year-old girl. A warrant for his arrest was signed Tuesday and arrangements were made for Boyd to turn himself in, the press release states.

Records from the Kemper County Detention Center show Boyd, 51, of Porterville, was booked at 2:48 p.m. Tuesday for statutory rape where the victim is under 14 and 24 or more months younger than the offender. He was released on bond shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
