Ochsner Laird Hospital in Union is advancing the detection of breast cancer for women in Newton County and the surrounding area with the recent installation of MAMMOMAT Revelation, a system that uses next-generation 3D mammography to detect breast cancer and help physicians make a more confident diagnosis.

“The MAMMOMAT Revelation utilizes wide-angle technology that makes it easier to find smaller lesions earlier and more accurately than with 2D mammography,” said Krista Crawford, radiology manager at Ochsner Laird Hospital. “Additionally, the system’s personalized compression feature helps alleviate the concern of pain and discomfort that is commonly associated with mammograms.”

Compression is key to getting an accurate mammogram. However, the associated discomfort is a key reason many women avoid mammography exams. Leveraging the personalized soft compression feature of the MAMMOMAT Revelation ensures each woman gets exactly the right amount of compression for her breast type. The force is automatically adjusted for the greatest individual comfort without compromising accuracy.

Revelation is also the first mammography platform to provide automated breast density measurements during examination. High breast density can increase a woman’s risk of developing cancer and is usually estimated visually during the image reading process, frequently after the patient leaves. With MAMMOMAT Revelation, getting this information during the exam enables immediate and personalized risk assessment, allowing the team at Ochsner Laird Hospital to provide supplemental imaging while the patient is in her exam.

“We are thrilled to bring this breakthrough technology to Union and the surrounding communities,” said Heather Davis, assistant vice president and administrator at Ochsner Laird Hospital. “When breast cancer is found early, the chances of survival are greatly improved. 3D mammography is critical to providing quality images that will ultimately save lives in our region.”
