A Lauderdale County woman accused of forcibly drowning her 2-year-old son will face increased charges due to evidence from autopsy results, Lauderdale County Sheriff Ward Calhoun announced Monday.
Deputies responding to a domestic disturbance call at a home in the 2600 block of Bolen Long Creek Road discovered the child’s body shortly before 8 p.m. June 18. After an initial investigation, the boy’s mother, Adrienne McDevitt, was charged with murder and given a $500,000 bond.
McDevitt was initially taken to a medical facility for treatment before being transported to Lauderdale County Detention Center. Detention center records show she was still in custody as of Monday afternoon.
At a press conference Wednesday, Calhoun said investigators were still trying to understand what happened and were awaiting autopsy results to confirm the cause of death.
Calhoun on Monday said his department has received the autopsy results, and McDevitt’s murder charge is upgraded to capital murder as a result of those findings.
“After receiving the preliminary autopsy results and conferring with the District Attorney’s office, charges against Adrienne McDevitt have been upgraded to capital murder with no bond,” he said via text message.
