A Lauderdale County Sheriff’s deputy was wounded and one person is dead after a traffic stop Friday on North Hills Street led to shooting.
Sheriff Ward Calhoun said the deputy stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Highway 493 and North Hills Street around 10:15 p.m. Friday. Gunshots were exchanged between the vehicle and the deputy, he said, with the deputy being injured.
“The deputy was taken to a local emergency room and is being treated for a single gunshot wound to the arm,” he said.
The passenger of the vehicle died at the scene, Calhoun said.
At a meeting of the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors Monday, Calhoun said his deputies train for the worst and hope for the best. While they would prefer to not be involved in a shooting at all, he said, Lauderdale County deputies are trained what to do in the event a shooting happens.
“I certainly don’t want this incident to have happened to begin with, but if they’re going to happen, we’re going to win,” he said. “And the way we do that is by making sure we’re trained properly.
Calhoun said he wants to thank the Meridian Police Department for assisting his deputies in securing the scene of the incident.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called in to take over the investigation, which is standard practice in shootings involving law enforcement. MBI will share its findings with the state Attorney General’s office once the investigation is complete.
