Voters will have several county level races where no incumbent appears on the ballot, including District 1 Justice Court judge, District 1 supervisor, sheriff and coroner.

In the District 1 Justice Court judge race, Democrat nominee Jessie “Coach” Hill Jr. and Republican Nick Lisi will face off to decide who will replace Ricky Roberts, who stepped down earlier this year to launch an unsuccessful bid to be the Republican nominee for sheriff.

In the District 1 supervisor race, Republican Justin “JJ” Anders and Democrat Tyrone Johnson are competing to succeed outgoing supervisor Jonathan Wells. Wells ran as one of five Republican candidates for coroner and was unsuccessful in getting the nomination.

Longtime Coroner Clayton Cobler and Sheriff Billy Sollie both announced they would retire after decades of service. Voters in November will chose between Republican Stella McMahan and Democrat Rita Jack to replace Cobler, whose retirement marks the end of a more than 60 year legacy of Coblers serving in the Lauderdale County Coroner’s office.

Sollie began his career in law enforcement in 1974 as a Meridian police officer and worked his way up to chief of police. He was elected sheriff in 1995 and has continued to serve the citizens of Lauderdale County in that role ever since. In total, he will retire in January with just under 50 years of service in law enforcement.

Vying to replace Sollie are his second in command, Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun, who clinched the Republican nomination in the August primary, as well as Democrat challenger Gerald Reon Johnson.

Voters can check to see if they are properly registered to vote online at yallvote.ms or by calling the Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk’s office at 601-482-9731.
