West Lauderdale Middle School was evacuated early Wednesday morning after staff was alerted to smoke coming from the 5th-grade building.

All students and staff were immediately evacuated, and all were safe and accounted for, said LCSD Superintendent John-Mark Cain.

Emergency responders were on the scene and controlled the source of the smoke. As a cautious step, students were dismissed early, Cain said.
