ROUNDUP (March 11-12, 2022): Northeast Lauderdale, Lamar get wins in baseball; Meridian softball shuts out Louisville

Paden Avera got the win for Northeast Lauderdale in relief as the Trojans edged Choctaw Central 4-3 in Friday evening prep baseball action.

Following starter Andrew McCary’s two shutout, four-strikeout innings, Avera pitched the final five frames and surrendered three runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out six.

Caden Pearsell was 3-for-3 for Northeast Lauderdale offensively, and Jake McElroy hit a home run, while Mitchell Butler, Will Garrett and Chance Guisgond all had doubles.

LAMAR 14, NEWTON COUNTY 3

Liam Gilbert had a double and drove in three runs for Lamar as the Raiders won at Newton County Friday.

Ross Polizzi finished 2-for-3 for Lamar, and Ty Wiggins went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored. Lawson Goodman was 2-for-4 with four runs scored for the Raiders.

West Pritchard got the win in relief for Lamar, pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up just one hit and five walks while striking out seven. John Powell had the save by getting the final out for the Raiders in the seventh inning.

For Newton County, Cooper Lewis finished 2-for-4, and Braxton May had a triple and three RBIs. 

Prep Softball

MERIDIAN 15, LOUISVILLE 0 

Oaklynne Daugherty finished 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs for Meridian as the Lady Wildcats blanked Louisville Friday.

Aaliyah Harris and Jazlynn Sulton both doubled for Meridian, and Brandi Morris hit a triple for the Lady Wildcats. Sulton got the win, pitching three innings and striking out eight. The game was called after the third due to the mercy rule.

NESHOBA CENTRAL 13, LEAKE CENTRAL 1

Charmayne Morris went 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run and two RBIs for the Lady Rockets as they blew out Leake Central Friday.

Kylie Posey had a double for Neshoba Central, and Lanayah Henry and Miley Thomas both went 2-for-3. Mauhree Jones got the win for the Lady Rockets, pitching three innings and striking out six. KK Goodin pitched the fourth, surrendering one run on three hits and striking out two. 

The game was called after four innings due to the mercy rule.

NEWTON COUNTY WINS TWO

The Lady Cougars swept a doubleheader Saturday, defeating Poplarville 18-15 and shutting out Moss Point 13-0.

Against Poplarville, Brelie Phillips finished 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, and Maeli Ben and Shae Jimmie both collected three hits and each doubled twice. Mandarie Leach was 3-for-4 with a double for the Lady Cougars.

Versus Moss Point, Ben and Krystal Wooten both doubled, and Elena Fernandez finished 2-for-2 with a triple. Natalie Lampton started for Newton County and pitched a scoreless first with one strikeout, while Hannah Chaney pitched the final three innings, striking out eight. The game was called after the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.
