The Wechsler Foundation has received a donation to help continue the history of the school.

The foundation received a $5,400 grant from National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, according to a press release. The special project grant will be used to create two mobile panels displaying the history of African-American education and the Civil Rights struggle in Meridian. 

Erected in 1894, the Wechsler School was the first brick school for African American children in Mississippi to be built with public money.

Edward Lynch, president of the Wechsler Foundation, said the panels will be taken to local schools, to teach children about the school’s significance. 

“To keep like the Wechsler School in forefront of people’s minds,” he  said.
