The Knights of Columbus, Council 802, Meridian recently honored George M. Thomas with its annual Msgr. John J. Burns Award for outstanding Community Service.

Thomas was honored for his many decades of service to the Meridian area including stints as president of the Meridian Civitan Club, the Meridian Jaycees, International President of the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Society, an appointed member of the National League of Cities Leadership Fellows and their Youth, Education and Family Committee.

He was also Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 2 for many years and coached youth softball and baseball. On the education front, he was a Professor of Education at Mississippi State University – Meridian from 1975-2011 and is now a Professor Emeritus.

Thomas, who has served Ward 1 on the Meridian City Council since 1985, was an early strong proponent of the Jeannie’s Place at Planet Playground and helped the original idea become a reality for the playground to now be accessible for children with disabilities. 

In addition to the reception and the plaque he received, the Knights donated $1,000.00 to the local Salvation Army in honor of Thomas.

The award dates to 1979, when the late Sen. John C. Stennis was the first recipient. The award has been presented yearly since then.
