Multi-faceted concert scheduled for weekend of Meridianites Picnic

When Meridian native and entertainment promoter Kino Mosley realized this year’s National Council of Meridianites Convention and Picnic was the five-year homecoming, he knew he wanted to do something enjoyable for those returning home — as well as those residing here.

“I knew it would be a large and diverse group of people coming to the city,” said Mosley, who, with his sister Stephanie, is a co-founder of bigLITTLE Productions. “I struggled with finding some type of entertainment that would appeal to all age groups and preferences.”

The end result was a combination of something both pleasing and funny to the ears: music and comedy.

“We have the blues — especially for those who haven’t heard any Mississippi blues in awhile — R&B and comedy,” Mosley said. “It’s a show that encompasses a variety of interests.” Blues singer Calvin Richardson and R&B singer TK Soul, along with comedians J.J. Williamson (aka JJ From the Sipp) and Marvin Hunter will perform Saturday, June 29 at The Temple Theater in downtown Meridian. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Following are brief bios of the performers:

• Calvin Richardson: Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and R&B recording artist who released the album “I Am Calvin” and has gone on to write and produce hit singles such as “Keep On Pushing,” “Falling Out,” “Hearsay” along with his new smash hit single “Can’t Let Go!”

Born and raised in Monroe, North Carolina (where he was the fifth of nine children), Richardson had a very musical upbringing —one he noted in a press release included a steady diet of R&B and African-American gospel.

• TK Soul: Born Terence Kimble in Winnfield, Louisiana, from a young age, Kimble had a keen ear for music and soaked up the influences of soul, funk and R&B music. TK Soul is known for his hits “Try Me,” “Looking For A Lady,” “Single Woman,” “I Wanna Hold My Baby” and “Party Like Back in The Day.”

• Jeremiah JJ Williamson. Born and raised in Jackson and currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, comedian JJ Williamson has had a very busy career working with comedy giants such as Chris Tucker, D.L. Hughley, Rickey Smiley and Bruce Bruce. JJ has also appeared on “Laugh Out Loud,” “Comedy Central” and the networks BET and HBO. He appeared on the big screen in the movie “Johnson Family Vacation,” starring Cedric the Entertainer and Vanessa Williams.

• Marvin Hunter. Born and reared in Vicksburg, Hunter was a stand out on Bounce TV’s “Off The Chain.” He has been a featured comedian on morning radio shows with comediennes Steve Harvey and Rickey Smiley and has also toured with comedian Mike Epps.

Tickets are $40, VIP; $30, general admission. Tickets may be purchased at Sam’s Fashion and Hair Queen in Meridian, Philly Hair and Beauty in Philadelphia and Hair & Beauty Supply in Newton. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the evening of the show at a $5 increase, Mosley said.
