Enterprise rolls; Lady Cougars fall 4-2

The Enterprise Lady Bulldogs surged past Taylorsville, 10-0, to take a 1-0 series lead in the MHSAA Class 2A South State champion series.

Enterprise returns home Saturday for Game 2, and if necessary, Game 3.
The Lady Bulldogs’ offense needed little time to get warm, as it accounted for three runs in the first inning. Enterprise added two more runs in both the fourth and fifth before pouring on three in the seventh.
Emma Herrington needed just 90 pitches to tally the complete game shutout. She recorded one strikeout and two walks.
Hannah Herrington was 3-for-4 with three runs and a team-high five RBIs. Faith Guy went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Kaitlynn Stroud finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Sydney Goodman and Morgan Partridge each added RBIs.
The Lady Bulldogs produced four extra-base hits. Hannah Herrington was responsible for two doubles and one triple, while Sarah Brannan contributed a triple.
Maycee Knight stole two bases, and Shawanda Gray swiped one.

Newton County 2
Vancleave nabbed a 4-2 victory against Newton County in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 4A South State championship series.
The best-of-three series resumes Saturday at Newton County with Game 2, and if necessary, Game 3.
The Lady Cougars trailed 4-0 to enter the top of the sixth but were able to cut Vancleave’s lead in half during the frame.
Katelyn Gipson and Lizzy Hollingsworth hit sacrifice flies in the top of the sixth to score Landree Amis and Brittany Thomas for the Lady Cougars’ first two runs of the night.
Thomas and Shelby Anderson finished with a team-high two hits apiece. Amis added a double to round out the Lady Cougars’ five hits.
Vancleave’s Bryn Daughtery was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run.
Avery Johnston earned the win in the circle. She fanned eight Newton County batters and allowed one earned run and five hits.
Anderson received the starting nod for the Lady Cougars. She struck out seven, surrendered three earned runs and yielded five hits.
