SOFTBALL ROUNDUPS: Newton County completes sweep of Purvis

Brittany Thomas had another strong performance on the mound for Newton County as the Lady Cougars completed the sweep of Purvis with a 5-1 win Saturday in Game 2 of the second round of the MHSAA Class 5A playoffs.
With the win, Newton County (25-6) advanced to the Class 4A South State series, which will be played May 3-4.
Thomas pitched all seven innings, surrendering just one run on five hits and three walks. She also struck out five. Offensively, Lizzy Hollingsworth finished 3-for-3, while Landree Amis went 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Weir was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Thomas and Shelby Anderson also collected hits.
Katelyn Gipson, Lorren Ivey and Karlye Tolbird also had RBIs for Newton County.
ENTERPRISE 6, LOYD STAR 0
Cousins Hannah and Mattie Herrington combined for the shutout as Enterprise punched its ticket to the Class 2A South State title series Saturday.
Enterprise tallied seven hits and three walks to win Game 2 of the second round of the Class 2A playoffs, while starting pitcher Hannah Herrington lasted three innings and surrendered just four walks while striking out two. Mattie Herrington pitched the final four innings, giving up just three hits.
Offensively, Hannah Herrington and Morgan Partridge finished 2-for-3, and Maycee Knight was 1-for-1 with a walk. Kaitlynn Stroud hit a triple, and Sydney Goodman singled.
Enterprise (24-3) will play Taylorsville in the South State title series May 3-4.
CHOCTAW CENTRAL 6, WESSON 2
The Lady Warriors only tallied five hits and a walk, but those hits came in key spots as Choctaw Central completed the sweep of Wesson Saturday afternoon in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs.
Ahnaya Williams had a two-run double for Choctaw Central, and Malaka Morris hit a solo home run and scored two runs. Tyra Billy had an RBI single, Maiya Joe and Kodi Jimmie also collected RBIs and Leia Phillips and Tia’Rain Saunders had hits for Choctaw Central as well.
Neera Bell pitched all seven innings for Choctaw Central to secure the win. She surrendered two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out five.
Choctaw Central (14-15) will play in the Class 3A South State title series May 3-4.
