Meridian Community College’s Nu Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa brought back the gold and more when the group met with other members of the international academic honor society at the Mississippi/Louisiana Regional conference held in Starkville.
Taking first place in the website, theme award and scrapbook, Nu Upsilon chapter members also garnered second place nods in regional board and most distinguished chapter. It won third place for its college project – the establishment of the Student Government Association – and a seventh place for the Honors in Action project of spotlighting human trafficking.
“We are very proud of the hard work and dedication of our students over the last year,” said Phyllis Holladay, one of the three Nu Upsilon chapter advisors. She said she was especially pleased with the students’ efforts. “They took the initiative to plan and execute two significant projects for our college and community,” she added.
In addition to the chapter receiving recognition, MCC Science Instructor Pam Cruse, one of the three Nu Upsilon chapter advisors, was recognized as the recipient of the Honors Advisor Award. The accolade acknowledges advisors for their exemplary service and dedication to the mission of PTK.
Nu Upsilon is among the 45 PTK chapters in the Mississippi/Louisiana region.
PTK is the largest academic honor society in higher education and recognizes and encourages the achievement of two-year college students. It is headquartered in Jackson.
