Kemper County supervisors face challenges

Each Kemper County incumbent supervisor has opposition in their re-election campaign, with some Democrats facing party opponents in the primary or independent opponents in the general election. 

The deadline for those wishing to qualify was Friday. Party primaries are Aug. 6, with the primary runoff on Aug. 27, if needed. The general election is Nov. 5.

In District 1, incumbent supervisor James (Pat) Granger faces a challenge in the Democratic primary from both Roy Anthony Boyd and Chris Collins.

Incumbent supervisor Johnny B. Whitsett will face Willie C. Ellerby in the Democratic primary, with the winner facing independent Rusty Calvert in the general election for District 2.

District 3 incumbent supervisor Justin Creer, a Democrat, will face independent Scott Johnson in November.

Mike Luke, an incumbent Democrat, will campaign against independent Marcell Chamberlin for supervisor of District 4.

District 5 has four candidates, with incumbent Christopher (Chris) Cole facing Helen Shan Roberts and Chandler “Bernard” Rush in the Democratic primary. The winner will see Christy Harbour Hamilton, an independent, in the general election.

Incumbent Sheriff James Moore, a Democrat, will compete against independent Steven Jackson in the general election.

In Circuit Court, incumbent clerk Tracey McCoy Murray, a Democrat, faces a challenge from Shirley Steele Jackson, an independent.

Ray C. Williams, the incumbent Democrat for Constable, will face independent Johnny Griffin for Post 1. Constable Post 2 incumbent Randy Thornton will face Michael Oliver and Jurlean Brown in the Democratic primary, with the primary winner facing Samuel Tisdale Jr., an independent, in the general election.

Terry Bostick, the incumbent coroner, will face Peggy Jones Henderson in the Democratic primary.

Democrat incumbents Sherline Dee-Dansby Watkins, Chancery Clerk; Jocelyn T. Robertson, Tax Assessor/Collector; Justice Court Judge Mary Purvis Gully, of Post 1; and Justice Court Judge Linda Sciple Wright, of Post 2; all have no opponents. 

The deadline to register to vote in the August primary is 5 p.m. on July 8.
