4 submit names for Newton County Sheriff

Following the announced retirement of Jackie Knight, the Newton County Sheriff, four men have submitted qualifying papers and will campaign for the November 2019 election. 

The deadline for those wishing to qualify was Friday. Party primaries are Aug. 6, with the primary runoff on Aug. 27, if needed. The general election is Nov. 5.

Joedy Pennington, Sammy Stevens and Billy Pat Walker will compete in the Republican primary for sheriff and the winner will face independent Randy Patrick. 

Incumbent Democrat May Bender will campaign against Republican Daniel “Peanut” Savell as tax assessor.

Republican incumbents George Hayes, for chancery clerk; Michael L. Butler, circuit court; Danny L. Shoemaker, coroner; and J. Douglas Smith, county attorney; all have no opposition. 

For District 1 Constable, incumbent Mark Spence will compete against Robert Holder and Mike Loper in the Republican primary while incumbent Donny Collins will compete against Chris Ferguson in the Republican primary for District 2.

Incumbents Kenneth E. Harris, a Democrat for District 1, and Charles Godwin, a Republican for District 4, face no opposition in supervisors races.

In District 2, incumbent Joe Alexander and Richard L. Hillhouse will face off in the Republican primary. 

John Everett and incumbent Charles Moulds will compete in the Republican primary before facing Bryan Withers, a Constitution Party candidate, in the general election for District 3 supervisor.

Republicans Ritchie Leon Hillhouse, Jacky Johnson and Lester S. Miles III will compete in the Republican primary before facing Democrat Carroll D. Johnson and independent Charles D. Scoggin in the general election for District 5 supervisor. 

In District 1 of the Justice Court, Ryan Hanner and incumbent Scott M. Round will compete in the Republican primary.

District 2 of the Justice Court has five candidates, including Republicans, a Democrat and an independent candidate. Justin K. Chaney, George L. (Butch) Meaders, Jr. and Danny Todd will compete in the Republican primary and the winner fill face Democrat Greg Morgan and independent Charlie E. Walker in November. 

The deadline to register to vote in the August primary is 5 p.m. on July 8.
