A judge on Thursday denied bond for a man accused in the stabbing death of his estranged wife.

Municipal Court Judge Robbie Jones denied the request from Shamell Hill, 43, who is charged with capital murder in the Jan. 19 stabbing death of 34-year-old Lashawnda Wooten.

Hill’s arrest came after police said he broke the door of Wooten’s residence on 44th Court, Meridian and stabbed her to death. The couple were going through a divorce, and Wooten had a protective order against Hill.

Hill was charged with capital murder because he allegedly killed his wife while breaking into her home, a felony.

Jones said that since Hill is accused of killing his wife in front of their children, he’s considered a danger to society and should not be in the community.

“I already believed he is a threat to society since he violated a court order,” Jones said. “The city doesn’t tolerate a loss of life and domestic violence.”

Hill waived his preliminary hearing and will remain at the Lauderdale County Detention Facilty until his case is brought before a grand jury.

The stabbing death was the first murder of 2019 in Meridian.
