FLOWOOD — Any division win on the road is critical.
Lamar School coach Josh Sherer will sure take it.
The Raiders used a big fourth quarter to get past Hartfield Academy 47-37 in a battle of unbeaten teams in MAIS Class AAAA, Division II, District 2 Tuesday night.
The two teams meet again next Tuesday at Lamar.
“I don’t think we played very well with turnovers, and we have to a better job of securing the basketball,” Sherer said. “I also think we caught them (Hartfield) on a night where they didn’t shoot it well. You have to find a way to pull those out, and we did.”
After Hartfield outscored Lamar 12-3 in the third quarter to take a 35-30 lead, the Raiders outscored the Hawks 17-2 in the fourth quarter behind freshmen point guard Demarcus Powe, who scored 11 of his 17 points in the final frame.
“It was no adjustments offensively, it was just taking care of the basketball and when that happens, things tend to go well,” Sherer said. “Demarcus is learning how to close games, and with him being just a freshman, he can learn so much, and he did tonight with free throws. He is a phenomal kid and does everything right.”
Joseph Hutchinson, a Princeton football commit, added 12 points for Lamar, while William Lamar chipped in nine points for the Raiders (10-13, 5-0), which has now won nine out of their last 10 games.
“I am proud of these guys for hitting free throws late, and our big man won the rebounding in the fourth quarter, which was big for us,” Sherer said. “I enjoy these kids. they play hard and want to win. We still have a long way to go even after beating everyone in the division once, and at any moment teams can beat you.”
Hill Savell had 17 points to lead Hartfield Academy, while Cruz Garner added seven points for the Hawks (15-5, 2-1).
Hartfield played their third game in the last four days and came in with wins over Jackson Prep on Saturday and MRA in the Rumble In The South Monday.
“Lamar is really good, and they play their roles really well and are hard to guard,” Hartfield coach Steven Makamson said. “We kept getting turnovers and shot it well in the fourth quarter. We are tired playing three games in four games, but that was not factor. Tonight was about what they did what and what we didn’t do well.”
