MIKE GILES: ‘Doe n heat’ scent leads trophy bucks in rut to hunter

Phillip Brent Allen hit the woods recently in search of a trophy buck. But before he went into the woods he applied some of Paul Meek’s deer scent on his boots. He hunted his way to the stand slowly and quietly while searching for a buck. Allen didn’t want to spook any deer on the way in and he was successful in arriving at the stand location.

“I like to use some of Paul Meek’s “doe n heat” while I’m walking to the stand and while I’m on the stand,” Allen said. “I’ll apply some to my boots and leave a scent trail on the way to the stand and then use it when I get there, too.”

Allen, a Morton native now with a Brandon mailing address, likes to spray a little scent throughout his hunt to keep the special buck attractant wafting in the air to entice any bucks in the area to take a peak at that hot doe.

“I’ll spray some of Meek’s Super Heat or Super Blend every so often to get their attention,” Allen said.

Allen also uses a grunt call in conjunction with the scents and he’s absolutely sure that the special scents made up by Paul Meek are key in his big buck success.

While he took a few days off to hunt recently he stayed in the woods and harvested not just one but two great Central Mississippi bucks.

The bucks came to him like they were on an invisible string.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that those bucks came to me because of Paul Meek’s special deer scents,” Allen said. “The last couple of years it has worked to bring in big bucks for me and I just wanted to thank Mr. Meek for his making those scents and providing them for the public to use.”

While the deer scents were no doubt a big part of Allen’s success, his hunting acumen was surely a big part of locating those bucks too. Allen has been able to locate bucks by using all of the skills at his disposal and a large part of that is by using his experience and knowledge in where to find big bucks and knowing how to get in an area and then what to do after he locates them.

“I actually had another good year and it all culminated in the last couple weeks using Paul Meek’s “doe n heat” and my favorite for the second year “Special Blend”, said Allen. It’s so good to know that a deer attractant scent works and then having the confidence to use it during such a short window every season.”

Allen is a believer in hunting during the rut as the bucks will appear from their nocturnal world of thickets and hideouts for a brief period of time as their mating urge becomes too strong to override their survival instincts.

Allen knows that his best chance of success at harvesting trophy bucks comes during the rut and with the help of Paul Meek’s deer scents he’s been able to harvest bucks that most people can only dream about. Knowing where to hunt and locating big bucks is a critical component of harvesting a trophy buck but you must know what to do in order to outwit the wise old warriors.

Phillip Brent Allen has found the keys to success trophy bucks and we’re fortunate to learn that a prime part of his strategy is to use Paul Meek’s deer scents. It absolutely works when applied properly and I’ve used it successfully many times myself. If you’re looking to harvest that last minute buck then find some Super Heat and Super Blend deer lure at your local outdoors store and get in the woods because you can’t kill them in the house!
