- Auditions set for MLT play featuring 'An Elvis' and four weddings
Two days of auditions have been scheduled for Meridian Little Theatre’s first production of 2019.
Auditions for the February presentation of “Four Weddings and An Elvis” will be Jan. 14 and 15, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Highway 39 North playhouse.
“This is a funny, sweet show with plenty of happy endings to go around,” MLT Director Ellie Massey said. “And it is appropriate for the whole family.”
“Four Weddings and An Elvis” details the story of Sandy, who owns a wedding chapel in Las Vegas, and four unusual weddings that take place in her establishment over a period of 18 months.
A lot of interesting people come through Sandy’s doors and they all want to get married.
“Trust me, she’s has seen everything! Or, at least — she thought she had!” Massey said.
From the aging TV stars who want to revive their sagging careers, to an angry couple dumped by the others’ ex — the laughs don’t let up until the final curtain closes, Massey said.
Zena Limerick will direct the MLT production and rehearsals will begin as soon as auditions are complete. The cast requires four women and six or seven men.
Cast of characters are:
Sandy, wedding chapel owner, age 40-65. Jaded, four-times married owner of a wedding chapel in Vegas for 17 years. She has seen it all. (
Bev, Bride #1 — very angry, age 30-40. Recently dumped, Bev is intent on a revenge marriage, but with the benefit of actually loving the man she is using to get even. Naive and romantic.
Stan, Groom #1 — very angry, age 30-40. Dumped by his wife, he is determined to marry the ex of the guy who got his girl. Still carrying a major torch for his former wife, revenge seems the right thing to do.
John, the Elvis minister, 20s or older. Works next door to Sandy’s chapel. He is able to play Elvis at the drop of a sequined hat, but has a sensitive, non cynical side.
Vanessa, Bride #2, age 40s or older. A fading actress who saw her glory days in a beach-blanket-bingo spy vs. spy sitcom. Still very glamorous.
Bryce, Groom #2, age 40s or older. A fading actor who wants to capture his bygone days. A one-time pretty boy, still a very well-groomed groom.
Lou, a minister, age 70s. A bit off in some ways. He was once an Elvis to be reckoned with.
Fiona, Bride #3, age late teens/20s. A tough ex-con. Never got a chance to make life work — bad home life, poor choice in friends, even worse choice in boyfriends. Now recently paroled and united with her postman Pen Pal love.
Marvin, Groom #3, age late teens/20s. A gentle postal worker. As well-versed in zip codes as his scriptures. Marvin knows to look on the inside and past the tattoos for an eternal companion.
Fist, a scary friend of Fiona, age late teens/20s. Obey the fist. He is a Cro-Magnon felon who punches first and then thinks about punching second, third and maybe even sixth!
Ken, the schnockered minister, any age. Very small part.
“Four Wedding and An Elvis” will run Feb. 21-26 at the Meridian Little Theatre. For tickets, call 601-482-6371.
