ELECTION 2019: Candidates start qualifying for Lauderdale County offices

- Cheryl Owens / The Meridian StarVan Goodman, Jonathan Wells and Josh Todd file qualifying papers at the Lauderdale County Circuit’s office with help from Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson and Chief Deputy Circuit Clerk Tina Moore Wednesday morning. Goodman is seeking the Justice Court Judge District 4 post, while incumbent supervisors Wells and Todd are eyeing the District 1 and District 3 seats, respectively.
The Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk’s office was busy Wednesday morning as candidates began filing qualifying papers for the 2019 elections.
Party primaries are Aug. 6, with the primary runoff on Aug. 27, if needed. The general election is Nov. 5.
In addition to state offices, countywide and county district offices will be on the ballot. Those offices are sheriff, county supervisors, chancery clerk, circuit clerk, tax assessor, tax collector, county attorney, surveyor, coroner, justice court judges and constables.
The deadline for those wishing to qualify is 5 p.m. on March 1.
Filing qualifying papers in Lauderdale County by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday were:
Supervisors: Incumbent Supervisors Johnathan Wells of District 1, Josh Todd of District 3 and Kyle Rutledge of District 5 all filed as Republicans.
Sheriff: Billy Sollie (Incumbent) – Republican.
Coroner: Clayton Cobler (Incumbent) – Republican.
Tax Assessor: James Rainey (Incumbent) – Republican.
Tax Collector: Doris Spidle (Incumbent) – Republican.
Justice Court Judges
District 1: Ricky Roberts (Incumbent) -Republican .
District 2: Ondray Harris, Sr. (Incumbent) – Democrat.
District 3: Paul Earley II (Incumbent) – Republican .
District 4: Van Goodman- Republican; Buck Roberts- Republican.
Constables
District 1: Tommie Coker (Incumbent) – Republican.
District 2: Ondray Harris Jr. (Incumbent) – Democrat.
District 3: Mike Myers (Incumbent) – Republican.
District 4: Chuck Roberts (Incumbent) – Republican.
The Secretary of State’s office handles qualifying for the offices of governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, auditor, commissioner of agriculture and commerce, transportation commissioners, public service commissioners, district attorney, state senators and state representatives.
The deadline to register to vote in the August primary is 5 p.m. on July 8.
