Leggett

• Nicholas Brooks has been selected to receive the WTOK TV Broadcast Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $1,000 award is funded through the MCC Foundation the local television affiliate.

Brooks, a 2016 graduate of West Lauderdale High School, is a sophomore in the Broadcast Communication Technology Program at MCC. He works part-time at WTOK-TV Station and Winn Dixie. Brooks plans to transfer to MSU for his bachelor’s degree then hopes to be a news reporter at WTOK.

• Warren Houston Parker has been selected to receive the Judie Bounds Rutledge Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This $800 award is funded through the Meridian Community College Foundation and established by her sister Cindy Schrock. Rutledge was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005 and fought hard to the end and died in November 2012.  She used each day to spread cheer and hope to everyone she came in contact with. One of the requirements to receive this award is, the recipient must be able to attend the Queen City Race for Life/Cancer Street Strut at Dumont Plaza.

Houston, a 2017 graduate of Saltillo High School, is in the University Transfer Program/Exercise Science at MCC. He is a member of the honors society, Phi Theta Kappa, FCA and baseball team. After graduating from MCC, Houston plans to transfer to a four-year university to receive a bachelor’s degree in exercise science to become a strength and conditioning coach.    

• Pattie “Alyssa” Clinton has been selected to receive the Jackie Bates Slay Memorial Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

This full tuition award is funded through the MCC Foundation by the Slay Family in memory of Jackie Bates Slay. 

  Clinton, a 2017 honors graduate of Enterprise High School, is a President’s and Dean’s List Sscholar and is in the University Transfer Program at MCC. She is a member of the Phil Hardin Foundation Honors College and Phi Theta Kappa. After graduating from MCC, Clinton plans to attend a four-year university majoring in Biology/Pre-Med. Her goal is to become a pediatrician or an ENT physician. 

• Bryce Essix and Adrianna Leggett have been selected to receive the Jerry Greene Hotel and Restaurant Supply Scholarship at Meridian Community College. 

These awards are funded through the MCC Foundation by the local food service equipment dealer. A member of the MCC Foundation Board of Directors, Mr. Greene is a recipient of the prestigious Hartley D. Peavey Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence. Students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Technology Program are chosen for these scholarships.  

  Essix, a 2016 graduate of Meridian High School, is a sophomore in the Culinary Arts Technology Program at MCC. He currently works part-time at Winn Dixie.  After graduation, Essix plans to continue his education at a culinary school.

  Leggett, a 2011 graduate of Meridian High School, is in the Hotel and Restaurant Management Technology/Culinary Program at MCC. She is an MCC EMT graduate, military wife and mother of three girls. Leggett plans continue her education in the MCC Marketing Program.

• BATON ROUGE, La. — Sarah Whittle of Newton, Mississippi, was recently initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Whittle was initiated at Mississippi University for Women.

Whittle is among 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

• HARRISONBURG, Va. — Allison Shelly of Collinsville, Mississippi, was among several Eastern Mennonite University students recognized for fall semester achievements and accomplishments during a special gathering in Lehman Auditorium.

Shelly received recognition from the office of student life given for service as a Student Government Association senator.

• SENATOBIA — Edward McCool of Philadelphia is among the list of distinguished Northwest Mississippi Community College students to be recognized for making the President’s List for their outstanding academic work during the Fall 2018 semester.

The President’s List includes students completing a minimum of 12 semester hours with a 3.75 to 4.0 grade point average.
